What the Milnerton site needed
The client was a private training centre in Milnerton serving learners, facilitators and office staff across several rooms. Their old setup was uneven, with some areas getting decent signal while others dropped out as soon as more than a few devices connected. Reception needed stable call handling, classrooms needed reliable internet for lesson content, and the admin team needed proper extensions so they could answer calls without running back and forth.
The brief was practical. Improve coverage, keep costs sensible, and make sure the site could handle everyday use without constant resets. The client also wanted guest WiFi kept separate from internal systems, which is a simple requirement on paper but easy to get wrong if the network is not planned properly.
- Guest access for learners and visitors
- Dedicated admin voice extensions
- Better coverage across teaching rooms
- Clear separation between public and internal traffic
Constraints we had to work around
The building had a mixed layout with classrooms, a reception area, offices and a few older walls that slowed down wireless coverage. Like many sites in the Cape Town area, it also had to keep working during the rollout because classes could not simply stop for cable runs and equipment changes. We planned the work in sections so that teaching could carry on with minimal interruption.
There was also a need to work around load-shedding and short utility interruptions. That meant keeping core network equipment on battery-backed power where possible, and making sure the fibre termination and voice hardware were arranged in a way that would recover cleanly after an outage. Coastal humidity was another factor, not extreme but enough to matter over time if patching and terminations are left untidy.
Municipal fire passages and access routes had to stay clear, so our cabling and cabinet placement were done with that in mind. Nothing fancy, just proper planning and neat installation so the client would not have a problem later.
What NewTel supplied and installed
We supplied a fibre internet solution sized for office and classroom use, together with a VoIP call setup for the admin team. The network was designed to support guest WiFi separately from internal users, and we installed structured cabling to give the classrooms and office areas reliable wired backhaul where it was needed. The result was a cleaner signal path and fewer dead spots in the building.
Our team handled the full delivery, from planning to cutover and handover. That included cabling routes, access point placement, voice extension setup, number configuration and testing. We also added basic monitoring so the client would have early warning if anything dropped or slowed down.
- Fibre installation with business-grade routing
- VoIP deployment for admin and reception users
- Number porting support for existing lines
- WiFi design for guest and internal access
- Network cabling to classrooms and office points
- Phone system support after go-live
Timeline and rollout sequence
The project ran over three weeks from site survey to final sign-off. Week one covered the assessment, requirements and cable route planning. Week two focused on the physical installation, including the fibre handoff, cabling, access points and the first round of voice configuration. Week three was used for testing, user training and final adjustments once the centre was operating again in normal conditions.
Because the site was active during the day, we did the noisier work after hours and came back for final checks early in the morning. That approach kept disruption low and gave us time to deal with any issues before the next class started. A short note to the client team, most of the time lost on projects like this comes from poor sequencing, not the actual cabling.
- Week 1: survey, layout review and network plan
- Week 2: cabling, fibre handoff and voice setup
- Week 3: testing, training and handover
Results for learners and staff
Once the rollout was complete, the centre had stronger internet performance in classrooms and a much cleaner handover for office calls. Guests could join a separate WiFi network without touching internal systems, and the admin team had proper extensions in place so calls were easier to manage. The staff no longer had to work around patchy signal or shared connections that slowed down everyone at the same time.
For the client, the practical gain was consistency. Lessons ran with fewer interruptions, file downloads completed faster, and the office team had a better way to handle incoming enquiries. There was also less pressure on the IT contact because the system was set up properly from the start, which reduces small headaches that can turn into bigger ones later.
The site also became easier to support. With structured cabling and clearer network zones, troubleshooting is quicker and future changes are simpler. That matters in a training centre, where room use can change and equipment gets moved around more often than people expect.
Why this approach worked well
The rollout worked because it matched the way the centre actually operates. We did not overcomplicate the setup, and we did not try to force a one-size-fits-all package into a building with mixed room use. Instead, we focused on steady connectivity, simple separation between guest and internal traffic, and voice handling that the admin team could use straight away.
If we were doing the same type of site again, we would keep the same sequence: survey first, then cabling and signal planning, then voice and WiFi testing once the core links are live. That order keeps the job tidy and helps avoid the common problem of installing hardware before the layout has been properly checked. It also gives the client a chance to confirm exactly how they want rooms used before anything is fixed in place.
- Start with the real room usage, not just the floor plan
- Keep guest WiFi fully separate from internal traffic
- Allow for battery-backed recovery during outages
- Test call quality and signal strength before sign-off
